Bedwetting is a common issue that affects many people of all ages.
It can be a source of shame and embarrassment, leading to anxiety and stress.
Hiding you’re a bedwetter is a matter of properly managing personal hygiene through the use of diapers, proper clean up of the bedding if any accidents occur, and the prompt proper disposal of used diapers in the morning. Developing good management habits and using the tools we have available to us can help keep your bedwetting a secret.
One of the primary concerns for those who struggle with bedwetting is managing the smell, which can be a dead giveaway. In this blog post, we will provide you with tips and tricks for managing bedwetting and avoiding any embarrassing situations.
Hide Bedwetting Smells With Proper Clean Up
As stated before one of the best ways to manage the smells of bedwetting is by exercising good personal hygiene.
For those who are chronic bedwetters or who wet the bed more than a few times a week it is advisable to use diapers to help with managing any accidents that may occur.
This helps make the clean up in the morning a lot easier and quicker.
If you wet the bed or have any major diaper leaks, make sure to clean up the bedding immediately!
Do not leave wet sheets or blankets piled up in your room, and do not leave them on the bed either.
Instead, put them in the washing machine as soon as possible. The longer you let them sit on your bed or in your room, the more the smell of ammonia is going to permeate your room or apartment.
One technique you can use to further help with preventing smells is spraying the urine spot on the bed with a spray bottle of water.
This can help wash the urine out of the mattress by saturating it with water and then pulling the water out with a dry towel.
After that, let it air dry, and it usually does a pretty good job of preventing any smells from lingering or urine stains from forming on the mattress.
Be Careful When Applying Diaper Powder Not To Get It Everywhere
If you use diapers to manage bedwetting, it is a good idea to use some type of diaper powder when you diaper up to help protect your skin. (try Dynamo’s Diaper Powder here!)
When applying powder to the diaper area, especially a medicated powder like Dynamo’s Diaper Powder, use your hand to rub it around. This helps to ensure the proper spread of the powder so that way it helps form a protective barrier on your skin.
However, it is important be careful as this can leave powder on your hand that you need to wipe off before taping your diaper up. This doesn’t matter as much for pull ups as it does for tape up diapers.
If you don’t you run the risk of it getting powder on the front of the diaper and causing tape failures.
While a wet wipe or towel would be good for this, some people (by that I mean ME, I do this…) may have a habit of wiping their hands off on the sheets. This can cause noticeable powder stains.
In such cases, it is best to use a wet wipe or wash cloth to wipe off any excess powder from your hands.
I’m not sure how many out there other than me do this so how big of a sign it is that might expose your bedwetting secret is debatable.
Beyond this bad habit though it is easy get powder all over the place and thus leave evidence of your need for overnight diapers.
Crinkly Bedwetting Sheets and Crinkly Diaper Sounds
One of the more likely signs that exposes bedwetters is noisy bedwetting sheets. Again, this is another one related to a more personally anecdotal experience I had as a teenager.
The sound of the mattress protectors nearly exposed my greatest fears of having my bedwetting discovered when a friend commented on the sound as she sat on my bed.
Add to that the fact that I grew up in constant humid heat of Florida and it makes for some scarring memories of these types of products. Due to the materials they were made of they would make sleeping very uncomfortable.
So much so that I’ve never been able to bring myself to use them as an adult. I personally haven’t used products like this in years.
However, I hear modern-day mattress protectors and sheets are not as noisy or uncomfortable as they used to be.
As for the crinkle of a diaper. This can be far more noticeable at night under some light fitting pajamas or night time wear.
One way to help prevent anyone from potentially hearing it is by wearing a snug fitting pair of underwear over your diaper. Not too tight as it can cause compression leaks but tight enough to constrict the movement of the plastic material and muffle it down a bit.
Properly Dispose Of Your Dirty Diapers
Another thing that can almost expose bedwetters is leaving a dirty diaper somewhere where they don’t want somebody to find it.
There is evidence out there of people doing strange and inappropriate things to hide their dirty diapers from being discovered. Heck, I have gone to some extensive lengths myself at times in order to hide my dirty diapers.
If you wear a diaper to manage your bedwetting, it is essential to dispose of it in a discreet and appropriate manner.
Preferably in a sealed bag or trash can.
If you are living with others they might accidentally come across the dirty diaper stashed somewhere that you thought it wouldn’t be found it can lead to some really embarrassing questions.
These days there are some diaper disposal bags made specifically for this purpose.
I’m still working my way through buying and testing products like this but one brand I would trust is Northshore’s Discreet Shields Disposal Bags found here.
Even though I haven’t tested this product out yet myself I trust Northshore enough at this point to expect this product will perform exactly as expected.
Up until recently I have mostly used plastic grocery bags but those are starting to become hard to come by in some places where laws are being rolled out to reduce plastic bag use.
The point is, having some sort of disposal bag to use will help ease the concerns we have over our dirty diapers being discovered and exposing our bedwetting secret.
Managing bedwetting in a way that keeps it a secret requires careful attention to personal hygiene practices, the management of all the noticeable signs, and the discreet disposal of dirty diapers.
These tips and tricks can help you avoid any embarrassing situations and feel more confident about managing bedwetting.
Remember, bedwetting is a common issue, and you are not alone in dealing with it.
