For years, talcum powder has been a common ingredient in baby powder and other personal care products, but there has been growing concern about its potential link to cancer.
As a result, many companies have begun to create talc-free powders, including medicated diaper powders for adults.
The following is a list of different medicated baby powders that I think would be great for helping any adult that needs to wear diapers prevent and treat diaper rash.
In the interest of full disclosure, while I haven’t tried these products directly myself I am familiar with their ingredients and composition from developing my own brand of medicated diaper powders.
I’ve experimented with many of the ingredients on my own skin. That said, I’ve come to respect the fact that each of these ingredients comes with its own effect and when combined they play together like the chords of a musical composition.
Their effects are compounded when combined together and different ingredients played together in different combinations will bring different results for the skin.
So when I analyze the following powders it is through the lens of my experience with creating my own powders and the tests I ran on myself while exploring different ingredient combinations.
Caldesene Baby Powder
Caldesene Powder is a medicated powder that is made up of cornstarch, zinc oxide, aloe vera, chamomile powder, kaolin clay, and tricalcium phosphate.
The most active ingredient in the mixture is the zinc oxide, which makes up 15% of the entire composition. In comparison, my own brand of Dynamo’s Diaper Powder now contains about 5.2% zinc oxide in both Unscented and Lavender scented variation of the product.
I have found that about 5% of zinc oxide in the entire mixture is the lowest possible point of effectiveness to see any results on mild forms of diaper rashes.
15% is sure to see some good results for you! Mix that with the combination of aloe vera, kaolin clay, and tricalcium phosphate and I have no doubt this formula will be soothing as well as effective.
Gold Bond Baby Powder
The Gold Bond Baby Powder is another popular brand of medicated diaper powder that contains triple action relief.
That simply means it uses a combination of provably effective powders to bring relief to your diaper area.
It is important to note that some variations of the Gold Bond body powder still contain talcum powder, so be sure to read the ingredients before making a purchase! As discussed earlier I would certainly recommend avoiding any products with talcum powder in them.
The composition of this powder is similar to the formula I use for Dynamo’s Diaper Powder but it uses cornstarch instead of arrowroot powder. It also uses triple the amount of zinc oxide that I have in my current mild variation of DDP.
This 15% benchmark with zinc oxide seems to be what a lot of brands arrive at going with even though the limit is up to 25% in powders and 40% in ointments.
I’m not yet convinced there is any reason for this other than it is what one brand went with and other’s decided to copy it.
Anti-Monkey Butt Baby Powder
The most active ingredient in Anti-Monkey Butt Baby Powder is calamine clay, which is primarily made up of zinc oxide with a hint of iron oxide.
This ingredient has a light pink color and can help reduce inflammation and dry out the affected area.
It also helps soothe and relieve discomfort, which are the effects of zinc oxide as well.
This particular powder mixture is said to have about 8% calamine clay in it so I would expect it to be effective in getting results.
I wouldn’t expect it to be a pure white powder composition though. It is more than likely a light pink color.
This is really a minor detail but I was pretty set on trying to make sure my own powder product was as white as possible. There is no practical functional reason for aiming for this other than a certain type of aesthetic.
CVS Medicated Baby Powder
The CVS Medicated Baby Powder is a much more affordable option than my Dynamo’s Diaper Powder AND is similar in composition to Gold Bond Baby Powder.
In fact, the formula used in this powder is almost identical to the Gold Bond Baby Powder. I’m not entirely sure how this is okay to do or which of these products actually came to market first.
Due to their similarities in composition I would expect them to perform about the same. There may be some slight differences in the potential fragrances used in each.
However, in some places online, Gold Bond Baby Powder appears to be cheaper than the CVS store brand option.
I guess whichever one you go with just depends on which is more conveniently located or delivered the quickest.
J&J’s Medicated Baby Powder
Johnson & Johnson’s Medicated Baby Powder can provide several benefits for adults who wear diapers.
It helps to absorb excess moisture, which can help prevent skin irritation and discomfort. It also helps to control odor with it’s add fragrance, keeping the diaper area fresh and clean.
This powder contains a more limited blend of skin-soothing ingredients with just zinc oxide and cornstarch listed on the label, which as we already know can help calm irritated or inflamed skin.
Unlike many of the other brands on this list it seems J&J opted to go for a more middle ground approach with 10% of their mixture being zinc oxide.
Like the rest of the powders on this list today it can help prevent chafing, which can be a common problem for people who wear diapers.
Finally, the medicated formula can provide a cooling and refreshing sensation, which can help keep the diaper area feeling comfortable and clean throughout the day.
Ammens Medicated Body Powder
Ammens Medicated Powder, containing 10% zinc oxide, is a potential choice for adults who wear diapers due to its ability to soothe and protect the skin.
Like many of the other potential powder options its absorbent properties help to keep skin dry.
Thus reducing the risk of irritation and rash.
Its antifungal and antibacterial ingredients may also help to prevent infections. This is one of the benefits of including the tricalcium phosphate.
This is the one ingredient that is missing from the above mentioned J&J Medicated powder. Otherwise these two powder formulas are almost identical.
It’s just one is marketed as medicated baby powder and the other is marketed as a body powder.
The powder’s subtle fragrance is said to help control odors, while its gentle formula is suitable for daily use.
However, as with any product, individual results may vary, and it’s important to consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about skin irritation or infection.
Mexsana Medicated Powder
Mexsana Medicated Powder is a talc-free option that includes skin-soothing ingredients such as zinc oxide (10%) and cornstarch, making it another great option for adults who wear diapers.
While it isn’t specifically marketed for this purpose it does contain the right amounts of zinc oxide in the powder helps to soothe and protect irritated skin in your diaper area.
One notable ingredient in this powder’s mixture that makes it a bit different from the others is the benzethonium chloride.
This is a type of antiseptic and disinfectant commonly used in topical medications and personal care products.
In Mexsana Medicated Powder, it is added to help prevent skin infections caused by bacteria and fungi. This makes sense since this product is primarily marketed to relieve foot discomfort.
Benzethonium chloride has been shown to be effective against a wide range of microorganisms and is often used in wound care products to prevent infections.
It is also a common ingredient in antiseptic sprays and hand sanitizers.
The exact concentration of benzethonium chloride in Mexsana Medicated Powder is not publicly disclosed by the manufacturer.
It does also contain some menthol in the powder too. This provides a cooling sensation that can help to relieve discomfort caused by chafing and irritation.
Overall, Mexsana Medicated Powder I think could make a great option for adults who want a talc-free powder that provides both comfort and relief.
Lucky Super Soft Powder
Lucky Super Soft Powder has a similar composition to MedPride Medicated Body Powder, with 1% zinc oxide and 0.15% menthol.
The colors of the bottles and the design schemes of these products are also similar.
Perhaps one of these products is a knock off of the other. Why people create products that are exactly like another product is beyond my ability to grasp.
While I excluded the MedPride powder from this list due to some other concerns I touch on in this YouTube video, the composition of Lucky Super Soft is nearly identical.
There are so many different skin powders out there that finding a unique combination isn’t that hard to do. I know because that is exactly what I did with Dynamo’s Diaper Powder.
When it comes to medicated diaper powders for adults in the market there are many options to choose from.
While none of them are specifically marketed as being for adults who wear diapers there are at least a few options for those of us who need products like this to help prevent diaper rashes.
Now that I have the eyes to see them after developing my own product, Dynamo’s Diaper Powder, I figured I’d do you a solid and share what I know.
As covered, it is essential to read the ingredients before purchasing any of them to avoid any talcum based powders.
When looking for a baby powder or diaper powder that specifically will be helpful in preventing diaper rash zinc oxide is the common active ingredient in these powders.
It helps soothe and relieve discomfort. So if you’re mainly looking for a diaper powder for diaper rash look for this one ingredient.
